Making Progress

January marked my one-year anniversary in Togo.  Looking back, I am amazed at how much things have changed over the past year.  When I arrived in Togo, the maternity department consisted of one long-term American midwife and one Togolese midwife who helped her in clinic.  Our American midwife was on-call 24/7 for months at a time! Thankfully things look much different today.

I have always felt that my purpose in coming here was to help create a sustainable maternity department and to teach as much as I can.  In the past year, we have been able to hire a second Togolese midwife and have trained both of the Togolese midwives to work in clinic, perform ultrasounds and, most importantly, take labor and delivery call! We also now have two long-term American nurses who help in clinic! Over the past few months, we have been able to redistribute the work load and that has made it much easier for everyone to carry the load together.

Thank God for His provision!

Hopefully in the next year I will be able to continue to teach our Togolese midwives more and more and will be able to start teaching our maternity nurses more about labor.

(I’ll also try to take more pictures.)

I made it to my first African wedding!
